Description

The listing, Tropeana Lunga Onion Seeds has ended.

This auction is for 10 Heirloom Tropeana Lunga Onion Seeds. All of my seeds are Heirloom, and non-GMO.

Tropeana Lunga Onion

(Torpedo Onion)
Intermediate day. Long-growing late variety producing a large pear-shaped bulb whose necks are light red on the outside and pinkish-white on the inside. Popular when consumed fresh thanks to its very tender sweet bulbs. This variety does not keep particularly well.
It is important to plant onions that are adapted to your area. This is an intermediate-day/long-day onion, it requires 12-14 hours of daylight at the end of its growth cycle to bulb up. Intermediate day onions can be grown in all states except for southern states. In northern states it matures early, in the middle states it matures later.

Heirloom, famous onion from Tropea in Calabria where it has its own festival. Very tender and sweet and considered to have a broad range of health benefits. Excellent roasted over charcoal on skewers or raw in salads.

Features
10 days, 70ºF.
Sow directly into packs or pots. Grow at 55ºF night temperature. Saleable plants in 6-8 weeks. Cut plants half way back if they stretch.

Sowing:
In autumn with replanting in January of February. Alternatively it can
be planted directly outdoors in January-February and harvested in
June-July.

Now I live in the SW where it can get down to freezing at night, would it be best to wait until March to plant this?

I am no expert, but yes I would suggest waiting until the last freeze. Or start inside and transplant after last freeze. Thanks! :)

Pagie, I was just told by a gardener here that between now and January is the time to plant onions. I may try both ways and see the difference. We get below freezing too and if we get any snow or ice storms they tend to be in Jan and Feb. You may just want to look it up for your area. I don't want to tell you the wrong info! :)

Hi! I am a beginning gardener, so not too sure, but I think that this is a cooler weather crop. It says day temps. 70 degrees and night 55. But I was also told to plant them now, and it is much cooler, so I'm a little confused on the subject. I need to look it up, but have had no time yet to do so. Sorry, I know that is no help. :(
