This is a species of Hibiscus native to the Old World tropics, used for production of bast fibre and as an infusion. It is an annual or perennial herb or woody-based subshrub, grows 3 to 8 feet tall. The leaves are deeply three- to five-lobed, 3 to 6 inches long, arranged alternately on the stems. In many cultures around the world the leaves are major ingredients in a variety of delicious dishes.

Roselle can be a short-lived perennial in zones 10 and 11 otherwise it is grown as an annual.

The flowers are 3 to 5 inches in diameter, pink in color, and have a stout fleshy calyx at the base, 1/3 to 1 inch wide, enlarging to 2 inches, fleshy and bright red as the fruit matures. It takes about six months to mature.

Sorrel has great antihypertensive properties. It is used as a diuretic, mild laxative, and treatment for cardiac and nerve diseases, coughs, fever and cancer.

The red calyces are used as food colouring, flowers or syrup or infused to make deliciously sweet teas, juices and cocktails with a flavor similar to cranberry or currant, especially in the Caribbean. The green leaves are used like a spicy version of spinach. The flowers, young fruits and leaves are edible.

Plant seeds a 1/2" below surface and keep warm and moist for the first few weeks.

Plants are quick to germinate but be careful to not overwater.
