Giant Speckled Christmas Lima Pole Bean (80 days)

A heavy yielder, easy to shell, and is a reliable producer in hot, humid areas.Christmas Limas are related to the lima bean, similar to the giant Peruvian Lima but plumper. This is a large bean with a maroon batik pattern over a creamy background.

The Christmas Lima may be referred to as a speckled lima or butter bean. The bean is 7/8 long and maintains its markings after cooking. The bean's chestnut flavor combined with its festive coloring are the reason for the name Christmas Lima.

The Christmas Lima has a buttery flavor and creamy texture. The lima's crisp nutty flavor- sometimes described as similar to chestnuts. The cooked texture is similar to that of a baked potato.

Lima beans, a popular garden item in many Southern areas, like warmer soils to germinate. But they often fail to set during extremely hot weather. They generally do well in most Southern gardens when planted in late summer or early fall and allowed to mature during cooler conditions.

These look like what my grandmother called "tobacco patch" beans.

Sort of. :-) Tobacco Patch Beans are an old Heirloom as well and mostly white with a little bit of speckling along the edge where the eye of the bean is. There are also slightly more elongated than a kidney bean and are a bush bean. They are used as a dry bean. I am glad you brought them up, I may just have to find some and get them. :-)

I actually just got done hunting some down from a rare and heirloom vegetable seed supplier from the web. I have some Tobacco Patch Seeds coming to me now since you got me interested in them. Now be on the lookout, I am going to list them in small portions on Listia once I get them. They sure are expensive enough for a small quantity, I hope they taste good! LOL..... :-)

Interesting that they are so expensive, since beans are so easy to dry and keep for seed :)

I guess it depends on the rarity of the bean. Some suppliers have gobs of varieties to choose from for a good price but when you start getting into the rare things in bulk, like Tobacco Patch, Appaloosa or the Calypso Varieties (ie. Orca, Butterscotch etc.) the price goes up. That's why in my auctions I mostly stick to the regular varieties of Beans & Peas and occasionally add the neat stuff for something different. :-) I just like it to be fun and interesting.
