The listing, STARLIGHT by Harlow Shapely - Astronomy has ended.
Offered for your consideration is this 1926 book on astronomy by noted astronomer, Dr. Harlow Shapely.
In brief, the late Shapely made many astronomical discoveries (in the literal as well as the figurative sense) and is still considered one of the world's premier astronomers. If you're not familiar with him or his body of work, the interweb has tons of info.
This book was written as part of the "Humanizing Knowledge Series" in the 1920s. From the mission statement inside the book, "The editors plan to present to the average man for his delight as well as his information great but little understood truths, the fruit of scholarly research" In essence, the goal was to present knowledge to the average man that was not shrouded in scientific techno-babble (although I don't think the term techno-babble was around in those days).
I've taken snaps of the contents, which offers a comprehensive overview of the stars and the heavens. Based on a stamp on the inside, it was formerly owned by CCNY. The book itself is in very good condition (but, being a schoolbook, that's not surprising; only two chaps signed it out. ;>), It measures 7"x4-3/4"x1/2" -- a wee bit smaller than a Kindle. The cover is hard cardboard with a embossed resin-cloth cover (as was typical in the 1920s).
This will make a great informative and collectible gift for the Carl Sagan in your life, and they'll be so-o-o-o-o delighted they'll never even notice you didn't spring for that $10,000 telescope they've been Jonesing for.
Star light, star bright, first star I see tonight, I wish I may, I wish I might, have my wish come true tonight.......Oh! If only it were that easy!
Thanks for looking and happy star gazing!
