The plants are compact, dwarf and stocky. It is a good producer bearing its pods high on the plants. The pods are broad and flat, measuring about seven inches long by three-quarters of an inch wide. They are dark-green in color, meaty and tasty. An excellent home garden variety.

Introduced commercially in 1904 by D. M. Ferry with the following note, "Although new to the seed trade, it has for many years been grown in the South." In 1907, Henry Field listed it as 'Fields First Early.' By the 1930s, nearly all seed companies, North and South, listed 'Tennessee Green Pod' in their catalogs. Each ounce is approximately 70 seeds.
