You get 5 seeds!

My father-in-law was the king of gardening in my opinion. Before he passed away, my husband and I were given many seeds from him to plant and these are from some of the wonderful melons that he grew. They are so unusual to look at it almost hurts to cut them when it’s eating time BUT we do. They taste as good as they look, firm, sweet, and juicy! Living in Mississippi there isn’t much that taste better than one of these watermelons when it’s hot as fire outside!

Questions & Comments
Original
Called 'Sun, Moon and Stars' when it was introduced in 1926.
A heavy watermelon -- ranging from 20 to as much as 50 pounds -- the 'Moon & Stars' has a dark green somewhat ridged rind with the aforementioned yellow mottling. Leaves are similarly mottled. Fruit may be round, oblong or pear-shaped.

The flesh, which can be red, pink-red or yellow, depending on the variety, is nowhere near as dense and smooth as that of the commonly grown 'Sugar Baby' or 'Crimson Sweet.

Cultivation: Like other watermelons, 'Moon & Stars' requires considerable heat and sun. To give them a head start, you can start them in seed pots indoors and transplant them into the garden when the soil has warmed to 60 degrees.
Watermelons like well-drained, sandy loam with a pH of 6 to 6.8. They don't want wet feet, and regular, but average, water will do. Mine are planted on a shallow mound-- and watered twice a day via soaker hose that surrounds the mound.

Plant eight to 10 seeds to a hill, 1/2 inch deep, with hills 8 feet apart. I over plant to insure good germination, thin to three plants per hill. Watermelons will spread 6 to 8 feet in any direction, so don't plant them adjacent to a main garden walkway.
