Description

The listing, Collectible letter opener, signed has ended.

Carved Ivory letter opener by the famed artist ALOYSIUS PIKONGANNA (g00gle him) what pieces aren't privately owned. Are in museums. ( some of his pieces are in the smithsonian) I acquired this piece from an estate auction. Id rather see it go to someone who appreciates the fine art of "scrimshaw carving". This piece needs a home. I am setting a minimum starting bid on this due to the potential value and rarity.

And since the artist Aloysius pikonganna died in 1986, 4 years before this ban even went into effect.

Ok. This is what I was able to find online regarding the sale of ivory. This is from the FWS.gov website. " if the elephant ivory was imported before Jan. 18, 1990 ( the date elephant ivory was officially listed in CITES) it can be sold within the united states across state lines, and or within a state."

I bought it at an estate auction this past summer. It came in a box lot with other stuff. So there is no receipt for just this. As for finding out about the age and what type of ivory.i have no way to determine that. Maybe I should just pull it and be done with it. Its starting to be more bother than its worth to me.

I need to know the type of ivory used and the date acquired or bought. Do you have a bill of sale or anything associated with this? I want this, really bad, but it may be illegal for me to buy it and for you to sell it. Go to FWC.gov to research, and get back to to me. Please!!!

I'll be honest with you, i tried listing it in EBay, but they have strict rules about not selling anything that's genuine ivory. So I had to pull it. I know it has worth, I just don't Know where to go with it. I have seen ( in my searching) some of his pieces Go to auction and fetch $800-$1300. Which to me seems crazy. But he does have a following.

To the best of my knowledge, no. This is what it looked like when I bought it.ive tried looking it up but all of his pieces are one of a kind. I'm not sure if he documented each piece but his carved signature is on the reverse side. Hope that helps.
