Pinon (pronounced pinyon) (Pinus edulis) is a small, drought-hardy, long-lived tree widespread in the southwestern United States. Its common name is derived from the Spanish piñon which refers to the large seed of pino (pine). For this reason the tree is known in the Southwest and throughout its range by this Spanish equivalent. Other common names are Colorado pinyon, nut pine, two-needle pinyon, and two-leaf pinyon. Its heavy, yellow wood is used primarily for fuel. Because of their delicate flavor its seeds are in much demand, making them a valuable commodity. The tree does not produce pinon nuts every year. A pinon nut crop happens every few years. The pleasantly fragrant pine sap is used as a medicinal salve and the pine needles can be chewed as an effective dentrifice.

The tree is easy to grow, drought hardy, and makes a great wind break. You are bidding on a small tree about 10 in. high. It will grow a few inches every year. The tree is still dormant ready for spring planting.
