The way to tell if it's real its to scrape it with your teeth. Real ones are gritty and fake ones will feel slick and smooth.

I'm sorry for the delay in responding! I have been doing some research! This is a tough one! There are many tests to determine if a pearl is real or not. And the 'tooth test' is not very reliable because there are too many variables that go in to that determination~if teeth are clean, tooth used for test, which part of the tooth used and position of the pearl on the tooth used. That being said I could not tell if it was real. And if the pearls were cultured or fresh water or treated in some way, the results also would come out differently.
The discoloration of some of the pearls leads me to believe that they may, indeed, be real,
So I decided to research the Tara Jewelry Co and discovered that it is a high-end Fifth Ave Co. and sometimes used D&E (DeLizza & Elster). Some jewelry in the Juliana style was manufactured by DeLizza & Elster for Tara. D&E also manufactured the Juliana & Gloria lines so Tara is in good company. The Tara mark on this jewelry was one used for jewelry manufactured by D&E.

So, in essence, I can't tell you whether or not the pearls are real. What I do know is that this is a wonderful vintage piece.
