Willow Leaf pole bean (Phaseolus lunatus forma salicis “Van Esel”), also known as the Willow Leaf lima bean, is an heirloom bean in the lima bean family. This pole butter bean is well-suited to home gardens in warm climates. The somewhat rare Willow Leaf cultivar traces its history back to 1891, where it was first grown in the Burpee township of Ontario, Canada, a region famous for its agricultural prowess.
The Willow Leaf pole bean looks very similar to a typical lima bean plant, but the difference lies in its distinct leaves. The leaflets of this plant have a lanceolate shape, similar to that of a peach or, as the name implies, willow leaf. As a pole bean, it features climbing vines that reach heights of about 6 to 10 feet at maturity. The Willow Leaf pole bean features edible seeds and produces white, flat-seeded beans.
This lima variety prefers moist, well-drained, moderately fertile soil, but it grows in all types of ground, including sandy, loamy and clay soils. Likewise, it accommodates soils with acidic, neutral and alkaline pH qualities. However, the Willow Leaf pole bean may drop its flowers if grown in nitrogen-rich soil. Each plant requires about 4 to 6 inches of soil space when planted in rows.
This plant handily resists heat and drought and thrives in southern and coastal areas. It is hardy up to U.S. Department of Agriculture plant hardiness zone 10. The Willow Leaf pole bean requires full sunlight; though generally low-maintenance, it does not do well in shady environments and does not tolerate frost. This bean should be planted in the spring season and typically flowers from July to September.
