US Lincoln Cent Errors / Mistrikes (8)
Mint errors are caused by deterioration in the die after many coins are struck or by a malfunction in the machinery. Many of these ‘oddities’ are quite common. You can research Lincoln Cent errors on the internet or check eBay where there are many ‘mint error’ coins for sale. The most famous errors include the 1955 ‘double die’ and the copper 1943 cent. If you are a Lincoln Cent collector you should have a few varieties represented in your collection as they are a common anomaly.
Here are 8 common Lincoln Cent ‘errors’.
If you are looking for a small collection of the various common Lincoln Cent errors look no further. These are some very fine and pronounced examples of eight errors caused by common problems such as die cracks, off center punches, and weak strikes. Years ago I collected quite a few of these and I have recently decided to reduce the size of my collection.
1) The BIE mint error
2) The lower part of the ‘B’ in LIBERTY filled in
3) The number ‘5’ in the date is filled in
4) The ‘weak strike’ error – the 1 in the date
5) The ‘extra wheat’ error
6) The ‘cracked die’ error
7) The ‘cracked skull’ error
8) The ‘Clipped Planchet’ error
The BIE mint error or variety is exclusive to Lincoln Cents. LIBERTY appears to be misspelled because of a die break in the area of the word LIBERTY. The die break is between the BE and looks like an ‘i’.
The lower part of the ‘B’ in LIBERTY filled in also due to die cracking
The ‘extra wheat’ error is due to cracking in the reverse die.
Missing Numbers or Letters are caused by a weak strike
The ‘Clipped Planchet’ error is caused by incorrect alignment in the stamping machine.
