from what I have been told some carriers unlock the device for free but im not sure if at&t is one of those carriers

Activation Lock makes it harder for anyone to use or sell your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch if it's ever lost or stolen. so if the icloud on the phone is locked then the phone is useless. the original owner would have to unlock/remove it so the phone could be used.

I think unlocking it is free and you can send an unlock request online. If anybody could tell me for sure if it is free or not I would appreciate it.
