Description

The listing, VANILLA BEAN ORCHID VINE CUTTING aka Vanilla planifolia has ended.

The weather is changing so fast in my area, we seem to be a month ahead and it's getting cold outside and I will have to decide what plants are coming in and ones that aren't. This vanilla bean vine is measured at 12" A very nice size. If I have any more that I do on Lista, they more than likely will not be this large. This is a one time shot and hope it does well.

True source of the vanilla bean. Climbing, fleshy vine that supports itself on host plants with aerial roots. If growing inside, will attach to walls. Part shade to deep shade and will not tolerate any frost. Thrives in humid, hot climate with consistant rainfall. Mine grows best in West facing window and just mist with a spray bottle every other day or so. Will grow up 100 ft but mine have never grown that much and I've had these orchids for 5+ years. I usually do not even mist it and it's happy, just make sure it is watered well and do not let dry out. These orchids can be very pricy so this is a great deal!
I've also experimented turning an aquarium into a terrarium with these vines in it and it did wonderful, also if you have a place in your bathroom, the steam and humidity will really make this rock. Flowers are fragrant but you do have to hand pollinate to produce the vanilla beans. Vine has 2 nodes for successful planting. Vine will be shipped in small damp amount of orchid soil and shipped small flat rate box.

You do have an overload of heavy burdens to carry...I can relate to a lot of it. I believe what Emmy was saying as a try this method by not watering the vine for a little bit might be a good idea and see if that does help. Keep the soil I sent you, don't throw that out. With the hurricane coming in today, the winds are picking up alot and I might not be in here for a little while if it gets worse but please when you can, and I know you are under a lot of pressure, keep me posted ok?

When I get more points I'll def be willing to give a bunch of them up for a slice off ur plant :) wish I had it now, lol. Just bought a brand new pot for inside my kitchen area & need a vine or hanging plant for it. I do good with orchids too. Oh, sorry to the girl having the life problems rt now. God never gives us more than we can handle, lol... I just want to strangle my sister when she tells me that... Lol. Just kidding about the strangling part, but seriously... Just when you don't think u San handle anything else in life- it starts to get a bit better... But in the meantime, take it one day at a time & be sure to remember taking care of "yourself too"! Good luck everyone bidding & best advice I can give is to leave plant alone. Talk to it but don't feed it water for about 1-2 weeks. I know that sounds like a LONG Time, lol, but I can almost promise u that's what it needs. I'll know if it looks "dry" ...but sonetimes when they are overwatered, they do look "wilted" and can have a kinda dried out look to leaves. Again, good luck to u!

Hi Gena, I probably will. It all mostly depends on the finanical part of it. i was glad to see there are so many people interested and i do like to share plants. It might end up being where the winner will have to pay the shipping...it all depends how much longer I can get these temp jobs.

I grow orchids in Florida. if in right temperature - the less watering the better they will do! overwater them and guaranteed to do bad - it may even kill plant :(

Thank you Emmy for stepping in. What I found is different things work for people. And the vanilla bean vine is temeramental with different situations, they way people handle them etc. I have experimented several times with this vine by leaving cuttings in a small jar of distilled water with just a touch of orchid food in the water and kept it there for almost a year and it did fine but in the beginning, I had a variegated vanilla vine but that one died...but am sure it was because I tried to hard to care for it.

I won your last vanilla vine cutting and I am here trying to win another and try again I think I have killed my cutting seems to be rotting or something and I am really sad about it really was hoping to get it started I don't know what I did wrong so I am going to try once more and if it doesn't work this time I guess I'll have to give up trying

Never give up! I have been told by many people...and I even went through that. Sometimes if you baby a plant, you stand a better chance of killing it. When I decided to let it go, water it when I remembered etc etc....thats when it started to thrive. You could look it up on line in a search or join a free orchid site and ask someone, there will be someone that is knowledgeable to help. But right now, I would say not to water it but try to find someone tonight online in these kind of plant groups....there will be someone to help.

Thank you for letting me know you are interested in hostas. I will go out today and see what all are ready that could be auctioned off. :)

Yup, but the vine has to grow a lot plus your humidity and water will play a part in it as well.

does it give off a fragrance of vanilla?

From what I've read yes. Mine do not grow well enough with the temps here and come winter...even inside, it's to cold for it to be happy and most plants I have, love humidity so it doesn't grow fast enough. This year I have a blue plant light that seems to be very promising in helping plants to grow. I will figure out some way to half enclose the vine into some clear plastic tubing or something..to help hold in more humidity. The best I can say is to do research on growing the vine in your area and find people online in orchid forums that can also give great ideas. Hope this helps.

how do you think this will do in AZ very hot and dry here most of the year.?
Aug 19th, 2011 at 1:38:36 PM PDT by
Original
I would think it would do great there...just don't let it be in full sun. It would need shade or dappled shade. Lots of water also.

Do Vanilla beans you can eat actually grow on this plant?
Aug 19th, 2011 at 4:11:24 AM PDT by
Original
Hi Starr, yes this is one of the vanilla bean vines that produce the highest quality of vanilla beans but the vine needs to grow fairly long and conditions have to be right, light/heat/humidity but if you do research on this, that will help you out a lot.
