I always wondered what they were for. Also does the big 6 mean it was made in 2006? I'm new to bills, but have collected coins and foreign money all my life.

The big 6 means that it is from the 6th Federal Reserve District, the Atlanta district. 6 corresponds with the F in the left seal as F is the 6th letter in the alphabet.
