Tips on How to Grow Blue Shrimp Plant
Soak the large seeds overnight and sow 3/4" deep outside after the last frost in your area or start indoors 4-6 weeks before the last frost, It will germinate in 7-21 days at 70F/21C. Watch out for damping off if you are starting them inside. Transplant to full sun and good soil for taller plants, partial shade for shorter, less floppy plants. It can be grown in pots. A half-hardy perennial that freely reseeds, in all but the warmest parts of North America it should be considered an annual. The leaves on this plant have a nice grayish/white "bloom" that makes them look more waxy. As the plant matures, the bracts (a leaf that acts like a flower petal) around the flower will change from green to purple to bright blue. Blue Shrimp Plant does well with heat but needs water. Harvest seeds before the pods hurl them around and plant in spring. This variety of blue gets 35in/90cm high and wide, taller in full sun. Deadheading will produce more flowers and more branching. It makes a good cut flower. Flowering attributes: One-inch long, purple tubes surrounded by large, almost heart shaped, purple-blue bracts. Leaf attributes: Glaucous, pale green-gray to blue, spoon-shaped foliage. Light: Full sun to light shade. Soil: For best results, plant in humus rich, moist but well-drained soil. Fertilizing: Use a complete organic fertilizer when seedlings appear and monthly applications thereafter. Propagation Methods: Sow seed in spring after danger of frost has passed. Though subtly colored, Cerinthe major ‘Purpurascens’ draws comment wherever it inserts itself.

Are these seed from your plans? This is a beautiful flower! I wonder if it would grow well in a hanging pot?

No, I plan on growing it this summer. It is a shrub, not for a hanging basket. I think it is about the prettiest thing I offer.

So in FL they would be a annual or perennial?
Mar 11th, 2015 at 12:46:12 PM PDT by
Original
Probably a perennial. Description states " in all but the warmest parts of North America it should be considered an annual." I would think Florida and California are probably the warmest places for it.

How bout south Texas? Is that warm enough! It's too seen hot for me most of the time. I don't have near enough credits to bid on the seeds of this beautiful plant. But I sure would like a few of them. If you are reposting I'm going to keep a close eye on your auctions. So I'm going to fan, please do fan back.

I run them all the time, I hear they do very well in Florida, so I am thinking they would probably bloom all the time in South Texas. I lived in San Antonio for a brief time in 1969, got homesick and came home to Maryland.

.A half-hardy perennial that freely reseeds, in all but the warmest parts of North America it should be considered an annual. So you need to save the seeds and consider it an annual unless you live in FL or CA or another really warm place.
