Questions & Comments
I need both of these drives - both mine and my husband's laptops don't have the capacity needed for us - I have a 100 gig he has an 80 gig - so.... if I win both of these I'll probably be throwing a couple sata 2.5 drives on myself ;)
indeed, im a computer technician myself so i definitely get where sata is a lot faster, my IDE drive is starting to make knocking noises so i know it's close time to replace, and ill remember that about the bios, i didnt know that (ive gotten a little rusty over the years)
True enough - but - its a lot more portable if I'm able to swap out the laptop hard drive(s) and put the smaller one in an enclosure. Quite a few external drives require a seperate power source - and that defeats the purpose of the portability of a laptop or tablet in my case ;)
It depends on the enclosure. But in any case - it shouldn't be necessary to hook up an external drive to a laptop when you're out and about - most times (when I'm using my tablet - tablet not like an ipad - it is a laptop that the screen flips around so you can fold it down - I like it to be as small as possible so I don't have to have cords and external devices attached) its an issue of convenience with me - that and not wanting external annoyances - if I want to be tethered, I'll use my desktop
by rights any sata hard drive should beat an ide drive hands down however that all depends on your setup which can change your 1.5/3/6gbps sata to a sad lowly speed that ide drives run at. when you get this or any new hdd when upgrading from ide please be sure to set it up in the bios as ahci it might end up running as a hardware emulated ide disk instead of true sata speeds :D
You may also want to look into some type of external hard drive as well. Instead of replacing my internal hard drive for lack of space I just invested in a 2tb external hard drive.
Most laptop hard drives are powered by the usb and don't need an external power source. You just need the adapter cords. They are usually pretty cheap on ebay or somewhere like that.
