This item goes up to a waist size 36. Large is usually 36-38. A size 36 won't work?

Yes, 36 will be perfect. Usually a large is 34-36/38 just depends on the brand and how they are made to fit.

I actually measured the waist. It measures between 34 and 36 inches. They could probably stretch more than 36 but I was allowing for comfort.
