Coin Information

The Hawaii State Quarter was released on November 3, 2008. This was the 50th coin in the State Quarter series, continuing the final year of the series. A launch ceremony was held at Bishop’s Square in downtown Honolulu.

The obverse of the coin was designed by William Cousins, based on the original Washington Quarter obverse designed by John Flanagan. It includes the inscriptions “United States of America,” “In God We Trust,” “Liberty,” and “Quarter Dollar.” The mint mark is also included to the right of Washington. This design has been used for the obverse of every coin in the State Quarter series.

The reverse of the coin was designed and engraved by Don Everhart. It features King Kamehameha I who unified the governance of the Hawaiian Islands in the early 1800’s. Inscriptions include “E Pluribus Unum,” “Arizona,” the dates 1959 and 2008, and “UA MAU KE EA O KA ‘AINA I KA PONO.” (Translated: The life of the land is perpetuated in righteousness.)

The Philadelphia mint produced 251.8 million and the Denver mint produced 254 million Hawaii Quarters. Proof and silver proof versions of the coin were produced at the San Francisco Mint.
