I'm listing these for parts but in reality they need a few parts and they will both work. I bought them as a project. A project that has sat untouched for 15 months so I'm offering them here. Gen 1 needs an LCD screen. The Gen 3 needs Home Button Assembly, display bezel and a dock connector. Both have brand new digitizers. In good cosmetic condition sans a crack on the Gen 3 near where the charger connects. Doesn't affect it other than being a blemish. These do not come with chargers. What you see is what you get. Specs for each iPad follow.

iPad Gen 1 A1337 (Wi-Fi/3G/GPS): 9.7” screen with an all aluminum back. SIM card slot for micro SIM card for data connectivity, 16 GB of flash memory storage.

iPad Gen 3 A1416 iPad 3rd Gen (Wi-Fi Only): 9.7-inch multitouch glossy LED-backlit "retina" display, dual-core 1 GHz Apple A5X "system on a chip" with quad core graphics, 1 GB of RAM, 64 GB of flash memory storage, rear-mounted 5 megapixel "iSight" camera, front-mounted VGA-quality "FaceTime" camera, 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0

The not so "fine print"

I have looked at this auction probably 10 times! Fantastic auction! I would love to win, I just know myself! I am afraid a year later, they would both be sitting in the same condition, with new parts next to them!!! The parts are really not that costly considering they would be 2 fully functional iPads. I know you said the screen is off on the 1st Gen. Is it completely off( as in all the little pieces around the edges?) taking any screen off is something I would ask someone else to do! Anyway, I will keep watching for now! Fantastic auction! BTW, Have you already purchased any of the replacement kits/parts for either one? Thanks again!!!

It doesn't have an LCD screen. That is one part that will have to be purchased. The most costly one. The rest are small.

So is the Gen 3 useable at all?
Will it boot up?

Is the screen on the gen 1 legible at all? Or does it show nothing at all?

They both just need the parts mentioned and they're good to go. The 3rd Gen boots up but there is no home button assembly so not much you can do. There is no screen on the Gen 1. It needs a new LCD screen as stated.
