Claude Monet's passion for flowers and landscape began, as I did for other Impressionist painters, in a desire to paint directly from nature in the open air. The hours Monet spent painting, often in the gardens to the ever-changing tones and colors displayed by the countryside at different times of day. Color revealed by light, Monet discovered, created different worlds out of the same hills, trees and flowers.

Over the years, Monet created his own world, making a glorious flower-filled garden, complete with waterlily pond, at his home in Giverny in the valley of the Seine. Here, his easel set amidst the wonderful profusion of his flower garden or beside the pond where the waterlilies shone like island universes in space, Monet painted hundreds of gloriously colored, light-filled canvases.
