Mint errors are caused by deterioration in the die after many coins are struck or by a malfunction in the machinery. Many of these ‘oddities’ are quite common. You can research coin errors on the internet or check eBay where there are many ‘mint error’ coins for sale. The most famous errors include the 1955 ‘double die’ and the copper 1943 cent. If you collect Lincoln Cents you should have a few examples represented in your collection.

If you are looking for some common Lincoln Cent errors look no further. These are some examples of errors caused by common problems such as die cracks, off center punches, and weak strikes.

I collected quite a few of these and I have recently decided to reduce the size of my collection.

Included in this auction are the following:
1) The BIE mint error
2) The lower part of the ‘B’ in LIBERTY filled in
3) The number ‘5’ in the date is filled in
4) The ‘weak strike’ error – the 7 in the date
5) The ‘extra wheat’ error
6) The ‘cracked die’ error
7) The ‘cracked skull’ error
8) The ‘Clipped Planchet’ error

The BIE mint error or variety is exclusive to Lincoln Cents. LIBERTY appears to be misspelled because of a die break in the area of the word LIBERTY. The die break is between the BE and looks like an ‘i’.

The lower part of the ‘B’ in LIBERTY filled in also due to die cracking

Filled in Letters and Numbers (like the number ‘5’ in the date) are one of the more common oddities caused by die cracking. Letters in the word Liberty are often filled in or numbers in the date.

The ‘extra wheat’ error is due to cracking in the reverse die.

Die cracks on coins are caused by a shallow crack in the die.

Missing Numbers or Letters are caused by a weak strike
