So they can be grown in the house for how long? Before you have to transplant outside?

A potted plant can be transplanted any time. Just don't break up the root ball and tease out the roots that are going in a circle so they can grow outward. Remember that lemons can't take a lot of very cold weather. Cold snaps in the teens can kill or damage it. Plant it on the south side of a building for protection.

Can I just leave it in a pot and bring it in the winter? I guess it would need a big pot

If you dont want it getting to big just keep it pruned and under control at the size you'd like to keep it
