All parts of the yellow bird of paradise shrub are toxic and should never be injested.

I found this information.
It will prefer a well drained soil so you will want to use a cactus & palm tree soil or add perlite to your soil. The best way to water this plant is with infrequent deep waterings. They do not tolerate frost well and when kept outside will need to be cut back after the winter. This plant can bloom year round if kept at the right temp! They require a lot of sunlight, so if it looks like it isn't doing well try giving it more light. They tolerate our full sun which means they can take your sun.

They are a very forgiving plant and will tolerate alot of substandard care, including being potted. This shrub can also be trained in to a Patio Tree.

I'm going to try with one of my seedlings so I know for sure, the one I have I didn't plant it grew wild, but i want a privacy hedge for my yard and using this on one side seemed like a good idea. It is toxic so take the necessary precautions. Good luck and happy biding. I fanned you.

I also found that the Yellow is also known as the Mexican Bird of Paradise, I thought that was the red one, it seems to a common misconception. This is the site where I found the above info: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/swest/msg0710295220309.html

The information I found above was the answer from someone in Illinois. The Hardiness is -10 F, so it should grow, but would need protection in the winter or grown inside, It doesn't tolerate frost.
