do not really understand how it is supposed to work... for use on block ice? the stand is just to hold the ice cracker? use like a hammer, or what?

Oh Ok. The stand is just for holding. You place an ice cube in your hand (that is how I saw it used) and wack it with the round end. I watched my father use this-I would have put a cloth on my hand to hold it but he did not.
