Description

The listing, EXTREMELY STUNNING GLASS ANTIQUE SNUFF BOTTLE PAINTED INSIDE REVERSE ON BOTH SIDES! SIMPLY GORGEOUS! has ended.

This is absolutely a gorgeous glass snuff bottle! Extremely detailed on both sides. I purchased it quite some time ago. It is PAINTED FROM THE INSIDE IN REVERSE, ON BOTH SIDES! and the shape of the glass is absolute perfection. I only have a basic camera, but no camera could do this bottle justice. ONE SIDE - Looks like a wise man riding a burrow with a flowing mustache and beard wrapped in a orange/red cloak wearing a hat. It looks as if a child on foot is following the man. It is extremely detailed with some color on all figures. There is some type of foreign lettering ahead of the burrow and just to the left top of the riders hat. Even shows some background on this side. THE SECOND SIDE has a bull bucking & slinging his head to the left & his fury is well illustrated. He is mounted by a rider that almost looks mythical as if some type of warrior. He is robed in fur and the fur extends over much of his face. I cannot even say for sure his face is human. Please do not ask me for any other photographs as these are the best that I can take. The top is a deep ruby reflective color and looks as if it may have a tiny flea bite may even buff out. My vision is very poor. Top never been taken off.

**** MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THIS ITEM - Please do not ask me the age or origin of this bottle. It has been way too long since I purchased it and I did not write down the information. The workmanship is so beautiful. Perhaps if you win you can research the writing on the one side. ****

Thank you for your kind comments. I too think that is is just an absolutely gorgeous work of art. The craftsmanship and time that must have gone into it just to learn the technique is fascinating to me. No, i have not found another one even similar, but I know what I paid years ago, and they charge so much for snuff bottles that are not near in my opinion in this class of beauty and control of your art. Someone put mush love into this piece. Thank you for wishing me well. Good luck if you are able o bid. Have a nice weekend. bless you. Jo

That's a good question. I have never had the lid off, but none of them that I have purchased have had one. I will check for you now and get right back to you as soon as I find out. Jo

Hi GossDarla, This is Jo in reference to your question as to whether or not there is a spoon attached to the lid of this snuff bottle. No, there is not a spoon, just a cork, but I did find some information about the spoons and why they are/were so rare in the first snuff bottles.
Snuff bottles were used by the Chinese during the Qing Dynasty to contain powdered tobacco. Smoking tobacco was illegal during the Qing Dynasty, but the use of snuff was allowed because the Chinese considered snuff to be a remedy for common illnesses such as colds, headaches and stomach disorders. Therefore, snuff was carried in a small bottle like other medicines. The SNUFF BOTTLE REPLACED THE SNUFF BOX USED BY THE EUROPEANS.
The stopper had a very small spoon attached for extracting the snuff. Though RARE, such bottles were also used by women in Europe in Victorian times, with the bottles typically made of cut glass

I think it probably depends on when it was made, but I cannot find any information on when the spoons may or may not have been added. There are some types of letters on the side of this one, but I have no idea what it says. Most of the bottles tell a story. Most were glass. There are many materials used now, but be careful, I have one about longevity and on the front the man is very young, on the back he is very old. I was told it was Amber and after many, many, conversations I was finally told is was a amber color and it was a type of plastic that appeared to be glass, but I wanted it because of the workmanship anyway. **** You have to be careful, very careful when buying turquoise bottles. Sometimes it is only in reference to the color, and sometimes it is a faux turquoise, yet considered turquoise (like a man made diamond for instance) **** You may have to ask questions for an eternity, but it is worth it, but the main thing I think after all the research you may or may not do is to get what you like.
