There have been 5 attempts to replace the high cost printing of $1 bills since 1971 with no success.
The 1st was the Ike dollar issued in 1971 which was the same size as the last silver dollars of old.

The big size was not accepted by the public so a new dollar, the Susan B Anthony was issued in 1979.
This coin was so similar to the quarter that the public refused to accept them and demanded that no more should be made.

Next up was the Sacagawea dollar (2000) this was the perfect dollar coin and should have eliminated the use of paper dollars. The coin was relatively small and looks exactly like a GOLD COIN. The problem here was it was called the Golden Dollar and many thought it was Gold or at least Gold plated so very few stayed in general circulation. This coin was later modified and called the Native dollar. The obverse was still the image of Sacagawea, but the reverse changed every year. This led to a more collectable coin rather than a circulating coin.

Next up the Presidential dollar, this coin had the same composition and size as the Native dollar. Four (4) different Presidents coins were issued each year starting in 2007. These coins were quickly removed for the presidential collection interest. The last coin to be released for circulation was James Garfield in 2010.

The mint continues today to mint the Native & President dollars in limited quantities for Collectors. 2015 will see the release of Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy and Johnson.

This is the 2006-S from a Silver Proof using latex gloves that you will receive. The coin is NOT Silver but is the normal Golden Color composite.
