I don't think that it has to be connected. Just an option.

Instructions say it "allows you to play over the internet". In looking at the instruction booklet, there is nothing indicating wifi is required. Never played a ds so trying to make sense out of the booklets:)

darn oh well.... I tried getting it for my 3 year old granddaughter cause she loves tinker bell and frozen. I guess she just has to learn you cant always get what you want... If you ever get tinker bell stuff in the future up here please let me know.
