Early 19th century (1800-1815) piece with European origins, likely French. Hand painted miniature portrait in oils on ivory, mounted on a small ivory or bone snuff box with tortoiseshell material lining interior. Portrait in good condition with some scuffing on convex glass cover. There is damage to the bottom half of the snuff box, with chips in the shell and bone missing, and the bottom piece of box is split in two pieces. It could easily be mended which I could try to do, but would like to leave that option for the new owner. This is from my mother's estate, and the lady in the portrait was a lady of import. It also had an old paper liner, not original to the piece but included as it was added over a century ago and is not fixed in it.
The snuff box is 2 1/8" in diameter with a depth of 3/4". This is a fabulous piece from the much-loved Empire Period, and the lady's dress and hair are unique snapshots from that period.
