If it's an iPhone 3 then it's original carrier was AT&T, the other carriers didn't pick up the iPhone until the 4th generation. AT&T phones can be used on prepaid networks such as Straight talk - all the buyer has to do is get it unlocked or buy a SIM card kit carried by Wal-Mart.

I've only used it when it's been connected to wifi. Other than that I don't know anything about it really sorry. It turns on. I've never had it or used it with any actual mobile service. It's just laying around and I'm trying to get rid of it. If somebody else has any use for it, they can have their way with the phone. Sorry hope that answers something for you.
