Description

The listing, Confederate Rose (Hibiscus mutabilis) Seeds has ended.

The Confederate Rose was at one time very common in the area of the Confederate States of America, which is how its common name was derived. Confederate Roses tend to be shrubby or treelike in Zones 9 and 10, though it behaves more like a perennial further north. Flowers can be double or single and are 4 to 6 inches in diameter. These plants have a very fast growth rate, when it does not freeze, the Confederate Rose can reach heights of 15 to 18 feet with a woody trunk. However a much bushier, 5 or 6 feet plant is more typical and provides more flowering.

Hi! I love when folks give a little seed history, ty!! F&W&B

If I could elaborate just a bit: the flowers turn from white to pink to red throughout the day...and the story goes that during the war, a wounded Confederate soldier lay dying at the base of a white hibiscus bush and by afternoon, as his blood spilled on to the tree it began to turn the flowers pink and by evening, as he had bled-out, the flowers turned to a final red. The bush is a reminder of this dramatic era in American history by remembering to change its colors throughout the day.
