The poppy is one of the easiest flowers to grow. They are drought tollerant and not picky about soil. They make a beautiful picture from May through September if you plant in intervals.If you plant the seeds in late fall, they will most likely lie dormant until conditions are just right in the spring. The seeds germinate at around 55F. Mine often come up in the fall, get to about 8 inches, and then will "winter over", but most wait until spring to start sprouting. If it is very hot where you live, then plant in the fall.When the seeds decide it is time to germinate, it takes about 10 to 25 days for them to sprout. When they do, they are almost microscopic.. If you plant in the fall, save some for spring, and vice versa. That way you will be able to determine which time is best for your climate. They reseed and will come back for you every year. You will have plenty to save for friends and neighbors and of course yourself ! A LITTLE TIP ! I LIKE TO SEND A FEW SEEDS WITH A PICTURE AND PLANTING DIRECTIONS IN MY CHRISTMAS CARDS. PEOPLE LOOK FORWARD TO THIS LITTLE GIFT EVERY YEAR ! NO ONE CAN BUY FOR EVERY ONE AND A LITTLE GESTURE GOES A LONG WAY !
Water your ground where you want your flowers to be. I mix the seeds with dirt or sand and sprinkle on top of the area.. Water again and mist daily until established. Then they pretty much like to be left alone. You can start indoors 4-8 weeks before your last frost but I have found mine to do better when not transplanted.
