Welcome to Listia! I'm a jewelry designer/instructor and have taught many to create this style of earring. Your cousin did a nice job! You should ask if the entire earring is created with genuine 10, 12, or 14k American made gold-filled wires. If so, the center design is called pattern wire and is quite weighty and sold by the inch. The outside round wire, and the binding half-round wires are sold by the foot... not cheap!

Genuine American gold-fill is governed by the Federal Trade Commission for quantity and quality of gold and has been used by US jewelers for over 100 years. It's created by forming empty tubes of solid gold, then filling with molten brass, and pressure completes the marriage of the 2.

This is in no way compared to the hundreds of other 'gold-filled' claims on Listia as it will not rub off and is at least 100 times thicker than plated, and will last a lifetime. Also, any machine created jewelry made in the USA from gold-fill must be regulated and hallmarked as such. Unlike the USA, there are very few other countries whom actually regulate and accurately hallmark their metals.

My info should help especially if your cousin confirms the metal used.
