for most dell no key needed may need to go online to reactivate.i have not had to on mine.it was install and then go online for updates only.

dell p4 desk top,i have used it on laptop also.i have 10 +of these some opend an i use them on all of my dell comps.

I believe it will install on a non-dell computer, you'll just have to activate it in 30 days, or they will lock you out of the user, I've installed Win XP from a Dell Installation disc to my custom built PC.
