Description

The listing, *Magical Garden* 10 Gray Headed Coneflower (Yes It's Yellow) has ended.

This is a native plant to Illinois and a perennial. It blooms from June through August and its nectar draws butterflies and bees. It is a lot taller than normal Coneflowers, growing between 3 to 7 feet tall. Flowers have up to 15 spreading to drooping yellow petals, each about 2 inches long, surrounding an erect, round to oval cone 1/2 to 3/4 inches tall. Some people think it smells like Anise, others think it has a strong citrus smell. The cone is gray brown or greenish, covered in hundreds of tiny brown disc flowers that bloom from the bottom of the cone up. As the seeds mature, post-blooming, the seed heads gradually change in color from black to gray. The mature seed heads are feasted upon by songbirds in the late Fall.

Native Americans used the root to cure toothaches, and they used the flower cones and leaves to make tea. Early pioneers would use the dried seed heads like cedar chips to protect their clothing in storage.
