The fishtail palm was named for its unusual leaves. They are shaped like a jagged fish's tail. These leaves form thick, swirled layers of ruffled fronds.

Fishtails are clustering palms that grow dense and full.
Many people like to put fishtails in an area where they've been considering bamboo because it won't spread as much or as fast, but gives the same kind of tropical look and privacy.

Fishtails are considered deer-resistant
Fishtails grow at a moderate rate to about 20 to 25 feet.
They're moderately cold tolerant. They do best in warmer areas of Zone 9B and southward, however can be grown in colder zones, potted, and brought in during cold snaps.

This palm can be grown in full sun to part shade.

Plant at least 6 or more feet from the house or other tall structure.

If planting in a row, situate them about 5 or 6 feet (or more) apart, or as close as 4 feet apart for faster filling in as a privacy screen.

Fishtails work well in containers while they're young, and can be acclimated to grow indoors.

I harvested these seeds from my fishtails this year, our fishtails are about 20' tall and we have them lining walkways in the compound. Beautiful plants, provide shade and privacy, easy to care for!
