Desert Rose seeds!! (African Rose)..

Adenium Obesum.. Native to arid areas of Africa, the Desert Rose is a gardener and plant lovers delight... This is a succulent bush with semi-deciduous leaves and very exotic flowers. The Obesum part in the name refers to the fat base of this plant.(pic 8) When re-potting, you expose the part of the base that has grown under the soil, which is always a suprise and adds a new look to the plant over and over again! The Desert Rose is fun to watch and a plant that will have you staring at it, no matter how long you have it.. A must have for any plant lover!!

This is a plant that is good for those who seem to "kill everything" because they can be stunning with little care.. However, a Desert Rose that has the proper sun exposure and more care will be a larger plant that produces more flowers... Also, taking more care with your Desert Rose can provide a more " valuable" plant, as older, larger, healthy specimens can sell for $2000 +++!!!..

Growing a Desert Rose from seed is the way to go because each seedling becomes a unique plant and assures a bulbous trunk, where a Desert Rose propagated from cuttings dosnt promise to have that interesting base..
The plant produces long bean pod style seed pods (pic 6) that contain plenty of seeds.. Pictures 8,9,10 and 11 show young Desert Rose plants..

How old is the plant in the picture? The bottom of the plant is quite large.

The mother plant is ust over 5 years old... yeah the base is pretty large.. and ill be repotting it soon...i moved the soil a little and i can see that the part of the base that will be exposed has done some interesting growing...

Fanned and watching! Will these tolerate the extreme heat of summer in central south florida? Up to 98-99 degrees some days..

Fanned you too :) ... yes this weather is great for them...Im in the wesley chapel area of florida...and the mother plant that you see, with the red flowers, is in an area that gets full sun all day long even on the hottest days.... when it doesnt rain, i water her well once a week or if the soil is really drying out....

they can be outside in warm weather, and they like full sun..... They should stay in the pot...one, so you can take them inside during the winter and two, they prefer to be "pot bound"...

These are so cool looking. Been in the flower/plant business for years and never saw anything like this! I'm from Michigan and my mother and I have a year round greenhouse, can't wait to start these!!!

Yeah they are definately one of my favorites! The pictures of the mother plant, with the red flowers, were taken while seeding..Before the seeding stage it held 26 flowers at one time...was really something to see..My favorite part though is the base..its always interesting and forming below the surface, so when you repot you bring that above the surface and the plant has that new look.. the pictures of the younger one with pink flowers show that the best..,, I bet the year round greenhouse is something else!

They can stay hardy to 34 degrees, but extended periods below 40 degrees can kill some of the branch.. Average minimum shouldnt stay below 55 degrees for healthiest results...
