Rare Old World Tropical!!!
Pentapetes phoenicea - a rare old-world tropics annual thats long blooming. Pentapetes is native to a wide region of tropical South Asia from Ceylon and India to northern Australia and the Philippines.
The bright scarlet mallow like flowers are held close to the stem, opening at noon, closing by dawn and appear all Summer long. Makes a tall 4ft multi branching shrub with a strong, upright central stem, it bears interesting & attractive long narrow foliage. This plant is also used medicinally and culinarily.
Do not plant out until warmer weather as it is not only frost sensitive but chill sensitive.
***Historical Notes: This unusual plant of the Old World Tropics, rarely cultivated in America, is a member of the chocolate family with brownish-green stems and mallow-like blossoms. It makes a handsome accent plant in the garden. There is also a pink flower variety. Thomas Jefferson grew the Scarlet Pentapetes variety in 1811 at the Monticello.

-Thrives in wet soil, but will tolerate drying out between watering.
