Yes it does need a battery the battery was up when I bought it and I wore it three times but I have a small wrist and this never fit me. I put it up and the battery went dead.

My guess when I put it on its about a 7.5 in" I wear about a 6.0 see why this doesn't fit me. I can't stand somthing sliding up my arn. Its a cuff style so there isn't any adjusting it at least for me.
