The HD-3000 Hi Definition Television PCI Card is an universal PCI 2.2 compliant card. The card receives NTSC, ATSC and Cable/QAM Signals and converts them to digital streams which are transported across the PCI bus. Display and MPEG2 decoding are done on the host computer in software and displayed on the computers monitor. The pcHDTV Hi Definition PCI card is based on Oren Semiconductor's ATSC receiver chip and Conexant's CX23883 NTSC receiver chip providing excellent HD and SD reception.

Yeah, I picked up a bunch of them during the DRM "scare," since they worked with Mythbuntu(?) out of the box... but PCI2.2 is getting a little old.

a.k.a. FCC Broadcast Flag. In 2006, the FCC was mandating all new televisions, cable boxes, television tuners accept a "Broadcast Flag" which would prevent that content from being recorded at the providers discretion.

The American Library Association sued the FCC and ultimately the US Court of Appeals ordered the FCC to rescind the mandate. The ruling only came a couple of weeks before the mandate was going to go into effect. If the Broadcast Flag was implemented, it would be illegal to sell recording devices (DVRs, etc) that didn't respect the flag. Your DVR would have been made pretty useless.

I bought a bunch of cards because I thought this might be it for recording video on my schedule. At the time, the Electronic Frontier Foundation had writing campaigns and even MythTV geek sessions. Folks could show up with their computers and this particular card and after a couple of hours could have a configured MythTV box.

No, it needs to be put inside a computer case.

For your netbook, your best bet is a USB style tuner.

i know this is a dumb queation but do you need a hd antenna to get stations or can you use a regualr cable line like i said im learnig about this computer stuff

You need an an antenna to get Over The Airways (OTA, broadcast) HD. I'd suggest checking antennaweb.org to determine what channels you can get.

Most cable companies use QAM, so you can probably watch unencrypted cable channels if you have cable.
