It's purple. The name on it is violet storm. From the box I had it appears to be a dark purple not a light.

does it work on med colored hair or would one have to bleach first?

I can't be 100% sure to be honest. My hair is already blonde so it was fine for me when I used the pink one. But the box did say for best results to use the lightening dye first.
