There are numerous views of the Wayside Inn…a real place known since colonial days as the Red-Horse Tavern at Sudbury, Massachusetts. Its name was changed in 1892 to Longfellow’s Wayside Inn in honor of the visit by Longfellow in 1862 and the subsequent publication of Tales of a Wayside Inn the following year.

The tales are written as a series of poems told by a random gathering of guests to each other: The Landlord’s Tale, The Student’s Tale, The Spanish Jew’s Tale, The Sicillian’s Tale, The Musician’s Tale, The Theologian’s Tale, The Poet’s Tale.
