Is this non-toxic so you can use it for food that may not be wrapped?

I don't know, I'd have to check with EPA. It's old Mexican and back then, I am sure they didn't think about non-toxic. I'd use it for non foods or wrapped candies, little cup foods and maybe a decoration. It's is a nice piece. Thanks for asking. Gerry
