WHITE NOBLE MAIDEN
Lupinus polyphyllus
Indigenous to North America, the tall 4-5' stately flowering stalks and big leaves of Lupine Polyphyllus can be found highlighting gardens and roadsides from the central pains of the U.S. to its surrounding coastlines.
In the 1820's, the mostly blue and somewhat imperfectly gaped flowering spikes of Lupine, made its way to the UK, where 100 years later it would draw the interest of flower enthusiast, George Russell. After 20 years of experimentation, Russell not only enlarged the flower and fixed the gaps with a tighter flower formation, but in what he called his desire to create "the perfect lupine" he also bred magnificent colors and color combinations.
In 1937, The Royal Horticultural Society awarded Russell its lifetime achievement award. His work on these amazing Cottage Garden Flowers continues to this day.
