Description

The listing, Beautiful Live Black Bamboo for Your Yard has ended.

Black Bamboo (Phyllostachys Nigra)

I will share some of my Black Bamboo with you. This is a VERY EXPENSIVE plant to buy. I'll dig up some of my rhizomes (the underground stem with roots from which the plants grow) and mail them to you.

This auction is for 3 black bamboo rhizomes.

Black Bamboo poles are colored green the first year and turn black the second. Your plants will produce culms (the canes or stems) that have a smaller diameter the first season, but they will become larger and larger with time. Some of mine are as large around as a tennis ball.

Height: I have two strands of black bamboo of this species that I planted about 20 years ago. The strand in the sun grows to 30+ feet; the one I have in partial shade about 18'+. This plant makes an excellent privacy screen -- that's how I've used it.

Temperatures and water: They are fine down to 0 degrees Fahrenheit (mulch heavily). Hot summers are fine provided they don't stay dry for an extended period of time during their first season, they will need to be kept watered more frequently; after that, they will need no extra care -- I never water mine, and they were unaffected (other than some leaf damage) through two summers with drought conditions. For the first two weeks after planting, keep them moist at all times until they get established.

The first picture shows the pretty black canes, and the last is a picture of black bamboo rhizomes.

I will ship these with material to keep them moist. You will need to get them in the ground (and watered) as soon as possible after you receive them.

I'll be glad to answer all questions, and I also recommend you Google this plant if you are interested.

Shipping is $14.00. I'm sorry I had to go up so much; I charged the last winner $7.00, but I ended up paying over $13.00 @ the PO, and trust me, digging this stuff up is no picnic. lol This is STILL a great deal, though. Black Bamboo sells for $50 and up elsewhere.

I'm still watching these bamboo auctions!! I did some reading and they say the canes don't turn black until year 2. Do you know if the canes will die in freezing weather? I'm worried that if I had some, and managed to keep it alive (zone 6b), I'd never get black canes because they'd die every winter...

The canes won't die, they will be fine in Zone 6B. In very extreme weather you might have some leaf damage, but that's it. You would need to mulch in winter, though. You should end up with black canes without any problems.

This one is a nice one to have -- it's very ornamental and not nearly as invasive as some of the other species. I really love it.

will this plant thrive in direct sun and very high temps and humidity? ( I can google too I guess, lol, but if you have experience with the plant) I would love to plant this outside of the windows to create a bit of privacy and filter out some of that sun! oh,and that plant looks really beautiful!

It does great in zones 7 and 8, but I think it would do fine in zone 9 if you kept it watered and it gave it some decent soil. You could also try it in very large pots, and if it looks like it is getting scorched move it to another location in your yard. It looks like (according to the internet) some people have been successful with it in zone 9.
