Originally drafted by the NFL New York Giants in 1958, Maynard played but one season with the Giants before moving to the CFL for a year. Upon his return, he signed with the AFL New York Titans in their first year of the AFL, and played with them through the merger with the NFL. He was a key target for Joe Namath in his later seasons, and played on the Super Bowl III championship team. He caught 633 passes in his career, and with an 18.7 yard per catch average, he average more yards per catch than any receiver with over 600 catches in NFL history. His jersey number was retired by the Jets, and Maynard was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
