Description

The listing, Really, REALLY Rare "Harper's Pictorial History of the Civil War" Vol. 1 - Pub. 1868 has ended.

You'd have to search far and low to find another of these. They are out there, but are few and far between. For a serious collector of Civil War memorabilia, the buck stops right here.

Published in 1868, this volume was originally one of two. I don't believe the other to be in my family's possession. I am the third generation in a hundred-plus year old home, and this one has been in the attic for at least that long.

There are abundant detailed photos and maps, within its 398 pages. I'd love to see this go to someone with the dedication and ability to have it restored or at least preserved for posterity.

EXISTING DAMAGE DECLARATION: There is significant damage to the spine. Front cover is totally separated from the back. Pages are somewhat yellowed, but there doesn't appear to be any damage related to mold, water, or insects. Page edges are dessicated, and crumbling, but the pages are intact and able to be turned.

It comes from my pet-friendly, smoke-free home. There are no returns. Great care will be undertaken to ensure that no further damage is sustained to the book in transit.

Thanks for bidding on my auctions :) Offering something for everyone. Make sure to view my numerous others!

By the way, I am happy if you fan me. However, I will hide all "fanned and watching" comments. No offense intended, but they're like commercials. :)

GOOD LUCK!

I hope you're able to, as well. With a long auction, it gives folks the opportunity to build credits. Good luck to you.

Pureandsimple, I am soo HAPPY that people recognize this for what it is: a national treasure. There aren't many out there, and it is nice to see vintage books on here. I'd love for the book community to grow on here. Thanks so much for listing this, regardless if I win or not.

tgreeson, I'm going to do my part. At some pointin the future, I am putting up a very old copy of The Book of Common Prayer. It's very small, but is in excellent condition for its age. If anyone knows of people that might be interested, please make them aware of it. As soon as I have access to my Internet again, I'll be putting it up. :)

When I referred to Vol. 1, that meant book 1. Starts at page 1, and goes to 398.

What a treasure! Yes, I hope it goes to someone who can have it taken care of. The separation of the cover can be addressed at a book bindery. The pages should be attended to by a conservator. It's value is in it's record of history.

ashratmanmar, I am not at home. I'm at the library retrieving my messages. If I had to guess, I'd say it was about 20-24" long, perhaps 18" wide, and 3" deep. I will take measurements later, and post them the next time I come to the library. It also probably weighs about 6-8 lbs.

Everyone, my computer is down, and I am logging in from the library. If I don't respond to comments right away, please don't be alarmed. I will check in periodically, if not every day. Thanks for your bids, and good luck!
