Mexican Fire opal is a gemstone in the opal family, it does not have the color play that other opals have, but it makes up for that with it's intense color, the more orange to read and clear, the more prized it is. The Mayas and Aztecs loved this gemstone and liked to use it in mosaics and for ritualistic purposes. They called it quetzalitzlipyollitli, the 'stone of the bird of paradise'.
I am quite partial to the Mexican Fire Opal, it is almost predominantly found in the Highlands of Mexico, they are very Unique in the world of Opals, they range from pale orange to an almost cherry red color, the deep orange is my favorite, they can be opaque to clear.
