Soap nuts make an excellent natural laundry detergent. Soapy substances called saponins are found in the outer shells of soap nuts. These saponins have the effect of detergents when mixed with water unlike the harsh detergents these natural detergents are effective, as well as gentle. They do not contain bleaching agents. You can use them safely with whites or colored clothes and come out odorless.
Place 3-4 nuts into a cotton bag or odd cotton sock, tie up or knot the top and place into the tub with your laundry. Remove the nuts after the cycle has finished and let dry (if there is time!) before your next load.
