Shell is a football legend and an Oakland Raiders hero. He played 15 seasons, all with the Raiders, making the Pro Bowl 8 times and being names All pro 4 times. He was inducted into the Pro Football hall of Fame in 1989.

Art Shell also took the helm for the Raiders as head coach in 1989. A year later, he took them all the way to the AFC Championship game, losing to Jim Kelly and the Buffalo Bills. Shell would take the Raiders to the playoffs twice more in his 6 seasons as head coach, compiling a 54-42 record, even missing the playoffs with a winning record twice. He was brought back again in 2006, with less spectacular results.
