A String of Beads (A Jane Whitefield novel)--former library book--good cond. GREAT READ!
A year after getting shot on a job that took a dangerous turn, Jane has settled into the quiet life of a suburban housewife in Amherst, NY--or so she thinks. One morning, as she comes back from a long run, Jane is met by an unusual sight: the female leaders of the eight Seneca clans are parked in her driveway in two black cars. The clan mothers tell Jane that Jimmy, a childhood friend from the reservation, is wanted by the police for the murder of a local white man. But instead of turning himself in, Jimmy has fled, and no one knows where he might be hiding.
At the clan mothers' request, Jane---an expert at hiding those who don't want to be found--sets out on Jimmy's trail. When they were fourteen, she and Jimmy, both having recently lost their fathers, decided to take s summer walking trip together in the old Seneca tradition, traveling through the forests and speaking only in their native tongue. Jane thinks Jimmy might have gone the same way now and begins retracing their steps from decades ago. But it soon becomes clear that the police aren't the only ones after Jimmy--and someone may have picked up Jane's scent as well. As the chase intensifies, the number of people caught up in this deadly plot grows, and Jane is the only one who can protect those endangered by it--just as she has protected the victimized and the hunted throughout her long career.
